Bio

69 year old retired guy. Happily married. Financially secure. Reasonable health. Active 'adventure' traveler. I enjoy the Caribbean, South America, New Zealand, Australia, and the National Parks of the USA. We enjoy gardening in the spring and summer here in Ohio. We raise a vegetable garden, lots of strawberries and asparagus. And a large Hummingbird/butterfly habitat. I'm a conservative guy politically, lifestyle wise, and believe in 'live and let live'. You're not going to change my opinions on stuff. And I'm not going to try to change yours. I'm here for interesting discussions on numerous topics....

Yep. Since the ACA was enacted, our insurance costs doubled, we lost 1/3 of our doctors because they're "not in plan" and there are specialists such as dermatologists who simply refuse to take patients with insurance from an ACA participating insurance company. Government mandated and managed healthcare!!!!! Oh boy! ;-)
Just a thought about the government managing a health care system for the entire population:
bigpawbullets comments on Sep 1, 2018:
Yikes! I'm currently filling additional sandbags and stacking them around my defensive fighting position. This wasn't an attack on old Bernie. Simply indicating the debacle was manage by a Socialist. I'm also unclear as to why anyone would think a single provider of healthcare for all, managed by our government, would be different from the way the VA is run. I've heard far more bad things from vets about the VA than I have good things. As far as the Republicans not wanting to pay for it, well, I'm not sure about that. I do know that the ACA: drastically raised my insurance costs and eliminated my access to doctors I have a history of going to and trusting. And, I've yet to see an implementation of this concept work in any other country with as diverse and large a population as the USA. The European examples listed in responses here are failing due to the influx of people who do not contribute financially to the system. I'm not anti-single payor or universal health care. I just don't think there is a currently proposed model that will not implode.
I will not do this to my kitties, but it is hysterical!

So, an uplifting medical story that just occurred. I got a "You've been selected for JURY DUTY" letter yesterday. Now, I can no longer hear well if there is the slightest amount of ambient noise around me. Us ex-military all have some hearing loss. Mine's about 45% and zero hearing for certain frequencies. So I called my GP this morning. Told him the situation. He's written the letter indicating I'm unfit for jury duty based on hearing loss. Linda is picking up said document on her way to the dentist. I then say "thanks for this great bottle of wine, and thanks for...... <whatever comes to mind, different each time>". Basically sharing the bounty of the planet with the planet. Interestingly enough, to me at least, was the attitude of the Dutch professionals who spent time working and living in the USA. I'm not sure how you'd do that. But, with the drastic reduction in cnc capable machinery costs, it would simply drive the production of those types of weapons underground. I'll use myself as an example since I'm not interested in breaking laws & endangering my excellent working relationship with ATF. I've a "Smithy" brand multi-machine tool designed for precision metal work. It's much like my ShopSmith multi-tool for woodworking. Both CNC capable. I can, in my single bay garage workshop, crank out all the "assault rifle", "submachine gun", high capacity semi-automatic pistols, all equipped with suppressors, you'd need to arm a light infantry platoon in less than a week. And I'm just an average hobby-gunsmith. So, stopping production at Colt, Remington, and other major firearms manufacturers would in fact, make the situation worse. My opinion only, of course.
