What McConnell is doing is not violating any law, or even any rule in the Senate. So it is not illegal. Should he be removed? The people of Kentucky will have the final say on that question (unless Robert Mueller or some other investigator turns up proof of McConnell's rumored illegal actions). Te good news is that his popularity in his home state is at an all time low, and the tax bill will have it dropping even more by November of next year. Having said that, I would like to add that I am beginning to think that Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump both suffer from fetal alcohol syndrome. One of the symptoms is the inability to understand consequences. McConnell has more than amply demonstrated that he has no regard for principles and established order. That can only arise in a situation where someone has no appreciation of the consequences of his actions.
For me... assassination of JFK.
mcgeo52 comments on Mar 11, 2019:
Sputnik. But for those who said the JFK assassination, here are my personal memories of that: I was living in Dallas, Texas on November 22,1963 and was in sixth grade at L. O.Donald Elementary School. My memories actually begin a few days before when the Dallas Independent School District announced that the only excused absences to go see the President would go to students who had a note saying that they were being accompanied by their parent. The announcement made it very clear that going to see the President with a legal guardian would not qualify as an excused absence. Even as a sixth grader I found this suspicious. There was only one student from my class who went to the parade. On the 22nd I arrived at school as usual approximately a half hour before my first class. I was a flag monitor. That means that I had the responsibility of raising the flags (American and Texas) on the pole in front of the school each morning and lowering them each afternoon. That was the windiest day of the school year. Larry Howell, the other monitor and my good friend since before first grade, and I had no problem getting the flags to the top of the pole, but the wind was blowing so hard that we could not pull the rope down enough to wrap around the cleat properly. We had to call Gary McFarland, a 7th grade Safety Patrol over for help, and he only managed to get the rope around the cleat by employing the 2” long 1” diameter dowel that was the handle of his Safety Patrol flag. After lunch I went to my fourth period math class in the southwest corner of the second floor. Sitting I the front corner by the door, I could not see the flag, but the students in the far corner of the room could, and they started giving me a hard time about what a bad job we had done that morning putting the flag up, since it was at least a flag’s height from the top of the pole. I distinctly remembered otherwise, just how high and tight it was. After walking across to the window and seeing what they were talking about, I told Mr. Owens, the teacher that I needed to go down and fix the problem. He said that I should go the office first and ask them about it. I thought this was a little strange, but I did as I was told. The secretary in the office asked why I was there and then disappeared for about a minute into the Principal’s office. She came back out and told me I should go back to class. About five minutes before the end of class I got called down to the office. I was taken into the Principal’s office. Mr. Breeding, the Principal, told me that the problem with the flag was that they had attempted to lower it to half-mast because the President and the Governor had been shot. He then told me that the President was dead but that, thankfully the Governor was still alive, ...

I would be wiling to testify as an expert witness that this is a fake. I have worked in graphic arts for decades, including four years testing Raster Image Processors for laser printers. I once failed a driver because the 7 in the Garamond font was a Times New Roman 7. That level of expertise explains why I was working for some of the top companies in the industry, including Kodak and Canon. I base my conclusion that this is a fake on two points: 1) While almost all the fonts we see today are proportionate, they were nigh unto non-existent in the mid 1960s. 2) Also, in the mid 1960s this would have been printed with a computer line printer, or typed on a typewriter, either of which would have used a ribbon. The print on this is so clean that it could only have been produced on a laser printer, or an inkjet printer; those technologies would not be available until the mid 1980s. Since I have mentioned dates, I will note that someone else has pointed out that any report card should have at least a semester and year on it. And it has also been pointed out that the "ENG 102 LITERATURE" is completely inconsistent with the course numbering found in Fordham's 1964-65 catalog. In short, this is a very obvious fake.

There are things Trump has done that even his staunchest supporters cannot ignore: • The tariff battle with China has caused way too many farmers in key states to go bankrupt, or close to it. • Factories he promised would stay open have closed. • The increase in taxes on the middle class is just starting to be felt. People will get another reminder of it next year. As much as some of his supporters may love his stands on some issues, when it comes down to it, people vote their pocketbook. Combine that with everything that the public is just starting to become aware of thanks to Cohen's testimony (with plenty to follow), and I think the Democrats have the potential to make the 2018 Blue Wave look like a ripple in a tea cup. The pendulum in this country is as far to the right as it has been since the 1920s. The smartest thing the Democrats can do is ride the swing back to the left.

@clarkatticus, your statement is seriously at odds with the facts. DWS did not resign as Chair of the DNC on the first day because she was having a bad hair day. She resigned because the emails proved she had help rig the primaries. And when the DNC was sued for running unfair primaries, they did not argue the primaries were fair. They argued that they were not legally required to run fair primaries. Not only did Bernie get screwed, but DWS,HRC, and the DNC screwed the entire country. My question, based on what I have seen on Agnostic.com and Facebook, is how many Hillbots will do their best to destroy Bernie instead of working to beat Trump?

mcgeo52 comments on Feb 19, 2019:
If you are blaming Bernie for Hillary's disaster of a campaign, you need to get your facts straight. In spite of the fact that Hillary did absolutely everything she could to alienate anyone who supported Bernie, his campaign staff and many of his volunteers tried to help Hillary. She basically refused their help and refused to listen when they tried to warn her she was in trouble in the key swing states. She was so damned certain that she was entitled to the Presidency that she also refused to listen to her husband when he tried to tell her that she needed to campaign in the swing states. Bernie would have beaten Trump in 2016 according to all of the polls. As long as the DNC doesn't rig the nomination to give us their Worst. Possible. Candidate. again, I'm not worried about Trump winning.

As much as I dislike Trump, I absolutely agree with this as far as it goes. I don't know if there will ever be enough evidence to convince Trump's die hard supporters that he has to go. But when his popular support is below 25% it would make sense to bring the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate. At that point we would either get rid of Trump or any Senator voting for him and running for re-election. Don't expect this to happen, and if it does it probably won't be until next year after the next round of filing and paying taxes under the Republican tax bill. The reason I don't expect it is that I believe Trump may well resign before then.

In 1984 Detroit was producing nothing worth buying. I bought a VW Rabbit GTI and my neighbor who had two Jeeps gave me a hard time about not buying American. I walked him over to his Jeeps, had him open the driver's door on each, and read the plate stating where the car was made. Both of them were from Canada. Then we walked back to the GTI to check it. The plate said "Made in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania". The fit, finish and overall quality of that GTI was as good as any car on the market at the time, including BMW and Mercedes. And it was a blast to drive. It was not that American workers were incapable of making a good car. And the VW factory was unionized, so you couldn't blame the unions. Detroit died because of bad management.

What was your most absurd first date?
mcgeo52 comments on Feb 8, 2019:
As far as the most absurd, it would probably be when I was doing graduate work in Environmental Studies. There was a young lady, an undergrad senior, in one of the 400 level classes. We became friends during the first few months of the school year and I invited her to go to the Holiday play being produced by the drama department at the end of the quarter. Shortly after I picked her up at her place she asked me to please not drive so fast. I may have been two or three miles over the posted limit, but it was nowhere near an excess speed. She explained that she would be much more comfortable if I would keep it down to about 5 mph under the limit. I knew then and there that this would be our first and last date. At the time I was widely regarded by friends as an expert on beating speeding tickets. But that just sets up the really absurd part of the date. We had finished a nice dinner and were almost to the campus when a Sheriff's car pulled up next to us at a traffic light. I pulled off the light and cruised at 5 mph under the limit to the next light, where I turned into the campus. When I noticed the deputy following me, I said, "We're about to be stopped." Sure enough, before I finished saying it I saw the lights and heard the siren. I immediately pulled into the angle in parking and the deputy pulled into the space on my right. He came around my car and asked for my license. I handed it to him but could not see his face because I was driving a small '73 Honda Civic and he was over 6'. I asked what the problem was since I knew I wasn't speeding. He said he was just checking who was on the road, and asked where we were going? I informed him we were going to the play in the campus theater. He wished us a good evening and handed my license back. My date asked, "What was that all about?" I didn't have an answer. Shortly before intermission there was a terrible pun in the script. It got quite a few groans, but I burst out laughing. My date looked at me and said, "It wasn't that funny." I replied, "That's not what I was laughing at. I'll explain at intermission." A few minutes later I told her I was laughing because I had figured out why we had been pulled over. It had taken a while but I had finally recognized the Deputy's voice. He was the same one who had pulled me over four times before, and the reason he stopped us was that I was diving so slow he thought someone might have stolen my car. That may sound far fetched, but the same Deputy taught a Monday afternoon Civics class at the local junior high. My sister was in his class; the first time he called roll he asked if she was related to me (McCalip is not a common last name? We have the technological ability to completely replace fossil fuel within less than four years with plant based fuel. Place organic material in a chamber from which the oxygen has been evacuated and super heat it. This process, known as pyrolysis, yields 10% gas, 15% carbon coke, and 75% sludge. The gas is a mixture of butane, methane and propane. We know how to process and use those gases. The coke can be burned to fuel the process (i.e., the process is exothermic unlike producing methanol). The sludge is indistinguishable from a medium light, sweet crude oil and can be run through most refineries. If you put the refractors (i.e., the pyrolysis units) at the refineries, you can replace crude oil pipelines with trains delivering the biomass. The only thing keeping us from doing this is politics. The only plant that produces sufficient biomass to make this feasible is the hemp plant, which only became legal to grow in all 50 states last year.
